What is offshore chicane?

Offshore chicanes are structures placed in offshore waters to redirect the flow of water and control sediment movement. These structures typically consist of submerged barriers, such as concrete blocks, boulders, or artificial reefs, that are strategically placed to create narrow corridors through which the water must flow. The aim of an offshore chicane is typically to promote natural sediment accumulation and habitat creation in otherwise barren or degraded offshore areas, while also reducing erosion and promoting shoreline stability. Additionally, offshore chicanes can be used to help control flooding and prevent damage to coastal infrastructure during extreme weather events. They are becoming increasingly popular as a tool for coastal management, and are being deployed in a variety of settings around the world.
